Malene Grotrian’s Dream Comes True

Starting her own label was Malene Grotrian’s life dream. She always knew she wanted to be a fashion designer and own a business so starting her own label seemed like the best bet.

Malene Grotrian started her line in June 2008 out of her home before opening her Studio Boutique & Atelier in Gastown.

She describes her designs as being, “inspired by timeless, unique and European style” and says her “mission is to inspire women to feel beautiful and confident. All pieces are sophisticated and created with femininity and elegance in mind.”

The Malene Grotrian line offers a wide variety of professional clothing, elegant evening attire and specialized custom designs for gala and bridal wear. All pieces include unique and unanticipated details creating a nouveau classic style.

Her vision was to create an “esthetic and timeless brand” that was also smart. She creates versatile designs that can be worn in a variety of ways to inspire the women wearing her line to create their own unique look.

The materials used are mostly wool, silks and natural fibres which are often textured. “Woven Jacquards for suiting, Dupioni silks for evening wear and a variety of knits for the more casual pieces,” she adds.

Malene also shares that fabrics are one of her major inspirations and that contrasts interests her a lot which she always keeps in mind when designing.

Her line is suitable for the office as well as evenings out on the town. They describe their Collections as “from Boardroom to the Ballroom.” Malene’s line includes draping bamboo and cotton looks, a vast array of cocktail and business wear such as suits, gala and evening attire.

“We have had brides, mothers of the bride and bridesmaids have custom designs created and they have also found the perfect dress off the rack,” she says. “I design all pieces with the intention they can be worn at different occasions.”

Born and raised in Denmark, Malene graduated from the Teko Center Denmark, design school. After re-locating to Canada she continued honing her tailored designs and couture fashion. “It was during this time that I discovered my true passion for women’s evening wear and the signature bustier; these experiences inspired the inception of the Malene Grotrian label,” she says.
